CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

When Coburg arrived back at Scotland Yard he found Lampson in the office.

‘You’re back,’ he said. ‘How did it go at the school?’

‘Really good,’ said Lampson. ‘I saw Terry’s teacher and she’s all for it. She’s going to make an announcement that we’re having our first meeting tomorrow afternoon. At this stage it’ll be just a kickabout and some training, and looking out for the ones worth having in the team.’ He added hastily. ‘I only chose that because I’m off tomorrow afternoon.’

‘I know you are. I do keep a check on the rota.’ Coburg and Lampson alternated their Saturday afternoons off.

‘How did you get on with the French?’ asked Lampson.

‘Better than expected, after their initial reluctance to talk to us.’ Then he frowned. ‘However, there’s something wrong there, Sergeant. I feel it in my bones. We need to find out where Yvette Corot was before she moved into the Mayfair flat and started working at Carlton Gardens. But if we find nothing, then it might indicate she only came to England in July.’

‘But how could she have when there’s no civilian traffic crossing the Channel, only military?’

‘Captain Dupont said people can get across the Channel if they have the right contacts. Secret agents from both sides are doing it all the time, but it’s very risky.’

‘Maybe she was a secret agent for the French.’

‘But if that was the case, why didn’t anyone at the Free French offices know about that? No, there’s more to her than meets the eye. One thing we did find out – that she and Janos Mila had something in common: they didn’t have much in the way of social contacts with their fellow workers. So who did she socialise with? And if no one, why not?’

‘So what do you want me to do?’

‘I’d like you to go back to Janos’s lodgings and talk to everyone in the house and see if you can find out what sort of life he led – any visitors, his friends, his interests. I’ll go and poke around at Claridge’s, see if I can find anyone there who knows something about him and who might have wanted him dead. Meet me at Claridge’s after you’ve finished.’
